Comforting misery of the top shelf

“When they opened the door that cold winter night, there was nothing to see and no one was to be expected.”

In a Victorian mansion a respectable couple is visited by an unannounced guest. They ignore the doorbell, but the mysterious guest slips inside and has no intentions leaving.

For Gruwel theatermaker Gienke Deuten was inspired by the American writer and illustrator Edward Gorey (1925-2000). A loner with an elegant sense of atrocities. His witty stories are about sinister creatures, lonely figures in fur coats, empty spaces in large mansions and rain that never stops.

Gruwel is a comforting, subtle and beautifully crafted play about what happens when you allow the slumbering unrest in your life and embraces.

Theatermaker Gienke Deuten likes to create chaos in order. At Firma Rieks Swarte she impressed people with Nachtschade, Hi Ha Heijermans and Happy Garden. Besides performances for adults, she also produced several youth performances, including VuurtorenWacht en Beet! and more recently Niet Huppelen! The last one was nominated for the Gouden Krekel 2014.
